Haunted Houses

Haunted Houses and Places – Where You Can Spend Time With the Spirits

There are a few incredibly popular haunted houses and haunted places around the world that attract visitors. Why? There’s something deliciously exciting about being scared. And there are few scares that compare with haunted houses and other haunted places.

The haunted places range from cemeteries to college dorms and hotels, from railroad tracks to graveyards. There are many places where the dead might walk, and all have the potential to become known for being haunted.

If you’re really setting out to find a ghost, do a bit of research first. Some “famous” haunted places have seen no activity in years. The stories continue to keep the legends alive. Here are a few that have consistently generated new reports of sightings.

Haunted Houses and Places in New Orleans

You’ll find many who say that New Orleans, Louisiana, is the most haunted city in the US. There have been a wide array of ghosts, spooks and haunts that reported in this city. The ghosts of New Orleans are so famous that visitors to the city can go on a tour of famous haunted places.

Whatever the reason, there seems to be a darkness to New Orleans that simply encourages the spirits to roam. And for whatever reason, those who live or visit the city seem perceptive and open to the experience. From the cemeteries to the French Quarter, you’re likely to have a ghostly encounter during your visit to New Orleans.

Ghosts of Edinburgh Castle – Scotland’s Haunted Spot

While the United States is a relatively young nation, other countries have some older haunted houses and places. Edinburgh Castle is one of those. Parts of the castle are reputed to be at least 900 years old and has been – among other things – a prison.

In addition to the prisoners who died there, there seems to be a ghost dog that also wanders the grounds.

Spend the Night With Spirits at the Crescent Hotel, Eureka Springs, Arkansas

The Crescent Hotel in Eureka Springs is one of that state’s most notorious spook sites. Guests have reported sighting several ghosts in the rooms and the hallways of this hotel.

Reportedly, the hotel was once a hospital of some sort – perhaps a mental institution. Several of the sightings include those who apparently died there during their stay. If the stories are to be believed, there were probably a number of guests who were pushed to their doom.

The Civil War Ghosts of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania

If a place of death is slated to become haunted, Gettysburg is a prime candidate. The tens of thousands of Union and Confederate soldiers who died on this Civil War battlefield left their mark on the land forever.

Those who tended the wounded and surveyed the battlefields are also said to have made an impression. Some report the smell of vanilla and peppermint in the area where the battle occurred. That’s because the ladies who were at the field reportedly held handkerchiefs soaked in these scents to allay the odor of death.

There are a number of haunted buildings in the area, in addition to the battlefield itself, which stretches over a great deal of the town.

The Ghosts of Alcatraz

Alcatraz, located in the San Francisco Bay, is arguably best known for its status as a prison that was nearly escape-proof. A number of bad men spent time there and many even died there. That it itself would make Alcatraz an ideal spot for ghosts and haunting, but it doesn’t stop there.

Maybe it’s more appropriate to say it doesn’t start there. It’s reported that the Indians who lived there long before the white settlers arrived knew of the rock island. Often surrounded with fog from the bay, it was even avoided then as an evil place.

The Ghosts in Your Town

You don’t have to travel the world to find haunted houses and other haunts. One website dedicated to breaking down haunted sites by country, state and then by city is at http://theshadowlands.net/places/.

So are these truly haunted? Or is there just some tale that started the rumor of haunting and has continued to keep the story alive? Whether you’re setting out to prove or disprove a story, finding haunted houses or haunted places shouldn’t be any trouble at all. Even in your own neighborhood.
