Halloween Decorations – Are You Supposed to be Scared?

The options for Halloween decorations have increased dramatically over the past few years. A few years ago, the only decorations that were really available were jack-o-lanterns and paper pumpkins. Today, there are thousands of Halloween decorations to choose from, and your imagination and budget are virtually the only limits. If you can imagine it, someone has probably marketed it.

Just consider the Halloween decorations available at your local hobby store. Then multiply that by the nearly infinite choices available on the Internet. By the time you’ve done that, you’ll probably realize that the biggest obstacle you’ll be facing is deciding which decorations you’ll choose.

The first step in this process is a crucial decision. Are you out to frighten the little ghosts and goblins who’ll come by your home this Halloween?  Considering the traditional connotations of Halloween, skeletons, ghosts, witches and the like may be high on your list of decoration musts. But don’t limit the decoration ideas for your home.

There are more parents, schools and other organizations that are opting to have costumes reflect a lighter side of the season and you may find that the best decorations aren’t scary at all. Remember that it’s not an “all or nothing” proposition. You can have the skeleton drop from your porch ceiling and the wonderfully-smiling pumpkin on your doorstep.

You should also keep ages in mind as you decide how scary you want your Halloween decorations to be. If you expect lots of tiny tots ringing your doorbell, scaring them probably isn’t the best idea. If you’re playing host to a group of teenagers, decoration ideas for your home can naturally go up a notch on the “scary meter.”

Don’t just stick with the traditional Halloween decorating choices. Want to do something a bit different? Instead of the skeletons and faux graves on your yard, go for whimsical or plain fun. Create a carnival scene complete with clowns and acrobats or use cats as the center of your decorations.

One of the recent trends in Halloween decorations is lighting. Just like Christmas lights are an important part of the seasonal decorations, indoor/outdoor lights for Halloween are becoming very popular. From pumpkins to black cats, you’ll find lots of decorations for your home and lawn that feature lights.

You’ll also find strings of lights in the traditional Halloween colors – blacks and oranges. These lights make your yard a more colorful place, but will serve an additional purpose as well. You’ll be helping light up the neighborhood to make trick-or-treating safer for the little tykes.

When you’re searching for decorating ideas for your home, don’t forget inside. Most of your trick-or-treaters will see your foyer. Soft indoor lights are good decoration ideas for your home. The lights will help keep the Halloween spirit going even when you open the door.

If you’re lucky enough to be having a party, your indoor decorations will be even more important. You may find that a theme is a good idea. For example, you can turn your living room into a big top, haunted house or castle. Search for decorations that can be sent home with guests as mementos of the evening.

Halloween decorations have come a long way over the past few years. Finding the perfect blend of scary and fun will make your yard one of the most popular stops in the neighborhood. Don’t be afraid to let your imagination run amok – this is one time of year that it’s perfectly acceptable!
